It was Italy's first skyscraper, and it is still the tallest.
On April 18, 2002 a bi-propelled Piper plane originating in Switzerland crashed into the 25th floor of the Pirelli Building in downtown Milan. Apparently the pilot had lost control over the plane, due to technical problems. In an attempt to bring the plane down safely, the pilot issued an SOS emergency call before colliding with the building.

The building was purchased in 1978 by the Region of Lombardia (Lombardy). It is now the region's main administration building, housing 1750 government workers including Regional Counsellors and the President.
