There is no specific use of the Spire. It is also known as "the monument of light" which is based on the illuminated top. Because of its use as monument and concerning its high building costs public discussion were quite controversial.
Originally the Spire was designed to avoid further developments towards urban planning neglects of that area. The city intended to refurbish the attractiveness.

Built in 2003, the Dublin Spire became one significant building of the skyline. It replaces Nelson's Pillar which was blown in 1966.
