Why living and working on solid ground? Why not using water as a basis for urban development and special architectural challenges?

Many projects and existing floating "villages" on the globe show that this architecture and urban planning on water is possible and reasonable. Due to over-crowded inner cities and a lack of space many creative companies and architects have begun to think about living and working space on rivers, lakes and even on the sea. The main idea always underlines the contact to nature and the unique position in the environment. Another key point is the mobility. To a certain limited extent floating buildings can be moved from one spot to another. Besides residential and office buildings many other uses can be imagined. Parking is always a problem in urban areas, so - why not building floating car parks? In times of climate change and an increasing water level this type of housing is ideal due to the flexibility especially in areas which are lower than sea level for example. Many people living next to bigger rivers have also experienced flooding situations which ruined their buildings.

Even huge high-rise buildings as hotel skyscrapers were already designed to swim on water. This shows that water can be used as non-solid ground for a large variety of building types and uses.

Floating car park in Japan

Apr. 27, 2008:

While surfing the web I found another interesting floating building - in Japan, next to Tokyo. This floating car park is connected to a bridge and links the areas of Kawasaki and Kisarazu.

Have a look here: http://www.techeblog.com/index.php/tech-gadget/video-floating-car-park

There are also numerous youtube vids as this one online:
