If you have ever been to Tokyo or Japan in general, you might have realized that parking in the crowded megacities is a little bit different compared to European or North American car parks. Usually, European car drivers drive into the city, get their parking ticket at the entry lane and steer their vehicle into the lot. Well, due to the lack of space in urban areas especially in Japan, developers, urban planners and technology companies built parks under different circumstances. Everything seems to be a question of space availability, innovative use of technology and car park logistics. In times of limited urban space and increasing car dimensions Tokyo for example offers automated car parks in the inner city. Even other cities from different countries start to take those systems into consideration.
Car parking space also becomes an increasingly important factor for residents and business investors. Americans have experienced a rise of prices for parking space - Japan's price level also increases. Thus, efficient use of urban space for parking is absolutely necessary. Tokyo offers some good examples for optimised use of urban space. Why not calling it parking 2.0?
